Orlando by Gaslight: Dreams and Nightmares

Salutations, adventurers and steampunks! I admit that this is not strictly northeast Florida steampunk (more central Florida, really), but I thought I might (if it is permitted by our illustrious moderators) let you all know about a steampunk live-action roleplaying chronicle which I will be starting on Saturday, the fifth of February, 2011. This entertainment will use the Mind's Eye Theatre (Revised) rules as presented in Laws of the Wild, Laws of the Wyld West, Laws of Ascension, The Shining Host, and Laws of the Hunt, with some house rules which I have posted on GoogleDocs. While this is a live-action entertainment, I have established a pair of GoogleGroups to handle play-by-email players who cannot attend regularly (though I'd urge you to pay us a visit from time to time for the full experience). The location for our games will usually be at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, though we plan on occasionally visiting other locations (such as the Grand Floridian Hotel and Resort at Walt Disney World for tea).

As those of you familiar with White Wolf Game Studios' product lines are aware, this chronicle allows player characters from Werewolf: the Apocalypse/Werewolf: the Wild West, Mage: the Ascension, and Changeling: the Dreaming. If you think you might be interested, contact me via PM with your email address, and I will send you the invitations to our GoogleGroups, GoogleDocs, and Obsidian Portal resources.

Release the Bats

A bit new to this ljcomm, but I thought you guys might want to know about this. There's a charity event this Friday at Gainesville's goth club (at the Attic, above the Venue, 233 W. University Ave). Steampunkers are welcome, so come dress in your finest and support the bats!

The Official Blurb:
Release the Bats will be a night of fun and dancing, all for a good cause. The night will have local DJs in a nightclub atmosphere, with The Florida Bat Conservancy hosting, helping raise awareness of the plight of the many bats in Florida.

There will also be a silent auction, with everything from signed books and comics to mini-bat houses and handcrafted jewelry. Doors open at 10pm, with a $5 donation. All proceeds will go to The Florida Bat Conservancy. So, come dance the night away for a good cause and Release the Bats. Last Weekend in Cowford

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is the thing I was thinking this weekend. This is the thing that had me amazed when I would sit or stand back and look at everyone.

We still exist.

Not only do we still exist we have thrived beyond my expectations. I should not be amazed by the level of cooperation that was exhibited from the Cowford Steampunk Society, the Jacksonville Photography Meet-Up Group, and the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, whose building is a character unto itself, but I am indeed amazed and humbled.

Thank you Rick for long ago inviting us to enter into a rich and rewarding partnership with the museum. Thank you to your staff for always making us feel like we are part of this wonderful treasure that is the Karpeles. The boiler room will forever from now on known as the dungeon.

Any chaos or preplanning errors were mine and mine alone. Not ever coordinating anything like this before there were a few suggestions and things that could have been done to make this even grander than it was. Please know that none of the suggestions I received fell on deaf ears. Next time they will be implemented.

Thank you Ralph for thinking of us when you needed photo subjects, thank you to all of your membership and their talents. Your photographers are awesome artists and it was such joy to be part of the creative process.

We are already talking about next time. More props. More stories. More wardrobe changes. As for me I plan on unleashing my Steampunk Tarzan.

My good citizens of Cowford… you are my Yoda’s and Obi Wan’s! Kelly, Jennifer, and the rest of the Shankhill Butchers are the strongback that holds this ship together. I thank you for all of the props, and all of the costume accessories, and most of all the picnic lunch. Everyone benefited from your good works and I applaud you! Bravo Ladies, Bravo!

Rick - Thank you for finding us, but most of all, thank you for being one of us.

Brian and staff- the boiler room…erg…dungeon was the belle of the ball. Your work in cleaning it up, but not to clean made it such a wonderful place to create epic images.

John – Professor Fate my ass. You are one of the nicest guys I know, and your quiet energy and the wondrous props you brought made every picture you were in a layered piece. Anyone can stand in front of a camera. Only a few can project a personality.

Ellin – I love doing stunt work with you! It has been too long since we worked together, and your historical expertise brought a texture that we didn’t have before. Brains, beauty, and guts, you are the total package.

Allie – You are a rock star! You know how I feel about that honorific and how I don’t toss it around lightly.

Stew – Thank you for driving up from Hoggetown to partake with us! It truly would not have been or ever will be the same without you. Nobody will ever know how much running around behind the scenes you do. Next time you play with us.

Lady Rosetta- How can one who lurks in the dark bring so much light? I am grateful for my shadow because it is always near and reminds me I am standing in the light. A thousand praises be to you Milady.

Adam -I am your stunt man baby! Next time I swear I won’t have walking pneumonia and will be able to crank out gags. I know you are used to me jumping higher, and hanging longer but I just couldn’t pull it off this time. Sorry Brother.

And with that fair ladies and gentlemen, I live for our next grand adventure…. The First Annual Cowford Beach Beach Party on April 11th.

I checked the original post concerning advertisements and whatnot, and it seems this is acceptable. If not and I have stepped on toes, pray let me know and feel free to remove the offending bits or request that I do so.

I am a local purveyor of vintage and steampunk-inspired jewelry. By local I mean you can dock your airship in Five Points and stroll into Fans & Stoves Antique Mall and peruse my wares. Until fairly recently, this was the only way to purchase these trinkets and gewgaws. I've set up an artfire account. In addition, flickr houses an excellent store - albeit rather random - of collected images of past and present work.

And now, my humble introduction...Collapse )

North-Central Florida Steampunk/Steamgoth Meet-Up and Photoshoot?

Would anyone be interested in a steampunk/steamgoth meet-up in the Gainesville, FL, area?  I did a little exploring this weekend and found some really great places for photo sessions and picnicking.  I'm thinking we could start at the Oaks Mall for the purposes of carpooling, and then go to Boulware Springs Park and Historic Waterworks for a picnic and photoshoot.  From there, we could go to the Living History Farm at Morningside Nature Center,  and then to either Dudley Farm State Park in Newberry or O'Leno State Park in High Springs (both of which have a $4/vehicle entrance fee).  There is also the option of checking out several places in downtown Gainesville.  I'm figuring that we could do this either on the 21st or the 28th, or next month on the 11th. (The 4th of April might also be an option, but that's my anniversary and two days before my birthday.)

Minutes from the Cowford meeting on the 21st of Fed.

Citizens and friends of Cowford,

I would like to thank the returning citizens of Cowford, Rick Minor- Director of the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, but most of all, all of the new gentles that attended what is by far our most successful meeting in our 1/3 of a year history.

For starters I as Hizzoner would like to apologize for any lewd, wild, bizarre, and /or in appropriate commentary I made while under the influence of cold medicines and fresh air. I really is unusual for me to be that sedate, and I promise next month I will be back to normal.

I propose, (i.e. I am going to do things this way until the citizen of Cowford actually have an election for a new Mayor.) that when ever we get invited to an event, those inviting us have to come to our meeting to propose their ideas.

This is why.

March 7th is the Green Cove Springs Historical Society Steam Train and Victorian Festival. From 10:00 am til 4:00 pm. IT IS FREE ADMITTENCE. The event is being held at the Historic Triangle at Green Cove Springs located at Ferris Street (Highway 16), and Walnut Street. There will of course be trains, but Civil War Re-enactors, craft displays and tours of the Victorian jail and courthouse. It just doesn’t get anymore old school than this Ladies and Gentlemen.

A citizen of Cowford is actually the director of this festival and her insights into exactly what we could provide, and immediate response to our own questions proved to be invaluable to the planning and approval process. We are fully going to support the festival, and hope that all who read this would be able to adjoin us. Victorian wear is not a requirement. Just an interest in history.

March 21st is thee big photo day. At our meeting we had representatives from all participating parties to hammer out the final details. Due to the number of participants, Photographers, their assistants, and the CONFIRMED models, I made the decision to cap off any further requests to join in the fun. This is to prevent any further bedlam that may arise with the shear number of people we will have running to and fro.

The Photogs will be arriving at 9:00 am to begin setting up cameras and scouting locations. Shooting will begin shortly thereafter. Bring props, bring costumes. Bring anything extra you have that you may wish to share. Most important bring ideas and concept. You Mayor has already been informed that he will be the subject of insidious designs fro both Doctor Fate, and the Shankhill Butchers. LET US MAKE GREAT ART!

Fear not. I have been told this is not the last time this shoot will happen and look forward to future collaborations between The Cowford Steampunk Society, the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, and the Jax Photo Meet-Up Group.

Pictures and links will be posted as soon as they are available.

March 28th in conjunction with the Mandarin Public Library we will be showing our softer side in a collaboration with their teen anime cub. More details will be announce But I thank Don for interrupting his family, and one, day off to chat with us about what they would like us to do fro them. I also wish to welcome him and one of the other teen directors Mike as our newest citizens.

The details will be made available as they unfold, but this is guaranteed to be a high exposure event and a great chance to interact with the community. All details will be posted on the forums at www.cowfordsteampunk.yuku.com .

Other business discussed, between pauses for impromptu role play, were;

-         Volunteering at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum. Our benifactor is a non-profit organization and the facilities he has offered is a most magnanimous offer that we have already with much success taken advantage of. I personally, before the photo shoot will be showing up to help clean up some of the areas that need a little attention and do some maintenance because I have thing for power tools. I encourage everyone when they have a chance to contact the museum and ask them for something to do.

-         A visit to the St. Mary’s Submarine Museum.

-          An interaction with Jacksonville’s chapter of the Single Action Shooter Society, the Cowford Regulators

-         April 11 is the First Annual Cowford Beach Beach Party at the Guana River State Park Middle Beach Entrance from 10:00 am ‘til whenever. The only semi-modern facility is a port-a-potty in the parking lot. Bring water, drinks, food, sunscreen, cabañas, and whatever else you are going to need or want. The event will be transitioning the hottest part of the day so come and be safe. Victorian bathing costumes and steampunky inspired swimwear encouraged.

-         April 18 will be our regular meeting at the Karpeles for those that could not make the beach party and those that survived it.

-         Our May 16th meeting will be a croquet and tea party on the greens next to the museum, weather permitting. Wardrobe is encouraged!

-         The Mayor for got the official map for the Great Cowford Land Grab, so this will be postponed until the April meeting. Rest assured, said map, I now in the official mayoral briefcase for safe keeping. Speaking of safe-keeping I would like to thank Brian profusely for noticing that I left said briefcase behind on a picnic bench and rescued it, stored it securely until I came to my senses and realized I left it behind. THANK BRIAN!!!

With that fair ladies and gentle men I conclude this State of the City report.

With my fondest regards,
